Natalie's Complete Guide to a very Vancouver NYE
8 1

Vancouverites are notorious for being TERRIBLE at events. We’re last minute planners, it’s a fact. Maybe it’s the lack of sun or the months upon months of rain but we seem to go into hibernation come November 1 and nothing and I mean nothing can get us out of our lulu wearing funk. This New Year’s Eve Vancouver is setting up to be one of the best and I’ve put together my top ten reasons to start planning now!

1. Where

La Vie En Rose -  This is the one you've been waiting for! Presented by Moët & Chandon, welcome to LA VIE EN ROSE at the newly renovated Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront Vancouver. The annual Draped in Style NYE series returns with the most elaborate design to celebrate 2017! Glowbal at TELUS Garden is the place to be in Vancouver when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve! Ring in 2016 in Vancouver’s hottest room! Enjoy a decadent Gala Menu and dance the night away on a large converted dance floor. Be treated to a champagne trolley and balloon drop at midnight! Bring your friends and loved ones, this is a night you don’t want to miss. To view the NYE Gala Menu click here. Call 604 602 0835 or email info@glowbal.ca to reserve today.

Toast to the New Year in Vancouver’s sexiest room. With an extravagant menu to live entertainment, Black+Blue is sure to ring in 2017 with a bang, as it will be transformed into a Moulin Rouge Cabaret, featuring Buddha Sax, DJ Slip, burlesque dancers, go-go dancers and more. Concord's NYE Vancouver

And of course 93.7 JRfm is excited to sponsor our very own 2nd annual NYE Vancouver! In partnership with Dine Alone Records, Concord’s New Year’s Eve Vancouver will also present live performances o the 93.7 JRfm Stage including, Meghan Patrick and Dan Davidson.

This year’s family-friendly event will feature multiple stages, a new countdown clock tower and early fireworks for families at 9:00 p.m. followed by a midnight countdown with a spectacular fireworks finale. The free community celebration will run from 6:30 p.m. to 12:10 a.m. on December 31, 2016 along Canada Place Way between Howe and Thurlow Streets. For more details visit http://www.jrfm.com/concertsandevents/Details.aspx?EventID=212434.

2. Transportation—

Arrive on time, all the time with the Ripe App. It’s your driver on demand for the evening. It’s easy to track your ride, find affordable luxury, pay via mobile and split the rates with your friends. Find more details at riperides.ca

I like using the eCab app when I know I’m going out on the town in Vancouver and have no time to wait. The app is great because it pulls in the combined fleet resources of Yellow Cab, Vancouver Taxi, MacLure’s Cabs and Black Top & Checker Cabs to create a single online dispatching system for over 600 vehicles in the city. How it works with eCab, customers can see the estimated pickup and arrival times, order a cab for immediate service or pre-reserve a cab, select a pick-up address, provide comments to drivers, pay directly through the app (or cash or card), track their taxi on a map in real-time, and rate their driver instantly. When the taxi is near the pick-up address, an alert message is sent to the customers. The app is available for free on both iOS and Android devices.

TIP: If flagging down a cab and the app don’t work try heading to any hotel. That’s always my last resort as they will be able to call you a cab for wherever you need to go.

3. What to wear—

Whenever I’m looking for a dress for an event or a party I can always find something that is just right for any occasion at Judith and Charles. Here are my top picks that are in stores now and perfect to add a little glamour to your night.

I just ordered a few pairs of shoes from ShoeDazzle at just $35.95 after I signed up for their membership, which was only $10. ShoeDazzle.com has the perfect styles for New Year’s Eve because they are fun and affordable! Here are my top choices to bring a little sparkle to your evening.

The Amandalyn in metallic gold adds a festive pop of color and shine, while the Rachel in tan is super trendy with the ankle wrap and would be the perfect accessory to something sparkly.

The Chloee is a flattering pump that looks like a present! The pointed toe balances out the feline bow detail and is a super chic style to ring in the new year.

Finally, we have the Kimka which is a red hot bootie which comes in handy with this chilly weather. The ShoeDazzle girl always wears the focal point of her outfit on her feet. Oh and did I mention ShoeDazzle is a member of the TechStyle family of fashion brands, which also includes JustFab, Fabletics, and FabKids.

4. How to rainproof your hair

PRODUCTS that I love to keep the frizz at bay when the rain sets in are:

DAVINES LOVE SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER helps smooth frizz from hair and is color safe. This duo will help you fight frizz all day and maintain the lustre in your hair! These products are ideal for all hair types and works best for smooth styles.

Retails for: Shampoo $27.50 Conditioner $35

And their STRONG HAIRSPRAY is the one thing that can definitely help hold your style all day in any kind of weather. Oh and it smells delicious too! This hairspray is great for styles with movement but also good for structured solid styles.  Layering the spray will create a stronger hold. Retails for: $37

All these products are exclusive to Davines salons only and you can find them all at VERONICA GOMES HAIR 1510 west 14th ave in Vancouver.

Another key element to saving your hair from the rain is by prepping your tresses with Kérastase Discipline Spray Fluidissime either before or after styling your hair ($56, can be purchased here). This finishing touch provides frizz controland hydration to any look, resulting in hair that is smooth, soft, and most importantly, protected from rain-induced frizz.

TIP: If you do get caught in the rain, my advice would be try not to touch those tresses! While the urge to smooth your strands is strong, touching them will only make your hair more frazzled. Instead, have a little pouch in your purse with a small hairbrush, hair-elastics and bobby pins for emergency touch-ups!

HAIRSTYLES: There are also a few styles that will help keep your hair intact from the rain. Suki’s Salon recommends any look that involves a braid will help to preserve your style. With your hair locked tightly together, your ‘do won’t budge if you get caught in the rain. Try a braided updo or a thick side braid for a fun twist on the original.

For a more classic look, you can also try a low chignon to the side, with a deep side part for a sleek look that won’t frizz easily.

For a fun look, try a top-knot with a twist. If your hair is teased, it will hold the volume of the top-knot, and that extra braid in the front will provide an extra element of control if things get damp.

And if all else fails, Revlon Stylst Artist Tim Kuo recommends embracing your natural curl and using Uniq One which is a great leave-in conditioner and very mouisturizing for your hair. A great way to address your wavy texture is to twist sections with your finger to coil the hair and ensure the hair won't frizz as easily.  This is a great tip to do when your hair is damp before competely dry.

For a straight, sleek hair – Use AG’s Firewall argan shine & flat iron spray to protect hair from heat styling and add incredible slip and shine. To protect hair from rain, clip back into a low, loose pony tail (and then remove once you arrive at your destination, the key is to loosely tie the ponytail, so you don’t have any kinks). Lock in style with Frizzproof argan anti-humidity finishing spray.
