New Years always means celebration, celebrating the successes and learning of the past year and celebrating a fresh new start and the chance to start over with a clean slate. Get in better shape, work-out more and be healthier is always on everyone’s list of New Year’s resolutions. I spoke with my friend Trevor Linden, President of Vancouver Canucks, ex professional hockey player and owner of multiple Orangetheory Fitness locations to get some feedback on tips to look good in the New Year. Not only is Trevor a really great guy, he has some excellent advice if you’re looking to get back into your workout routine.
It’s no secret, looking and feeling good is directly associated with a healthy diet, combined with regular exercise. But to achieve the best results, Trevor recommends working out in intervals of cardio and strength training. If done correctly you can burn between 500-1,000 calories per workout. If motivation is a challenge, leave it to the experts. There are skilled personal trainers and class instructors that can provide you with that extra push to help you achieve your overall fitness goals.
For those of you who are making New Year’s resolutions, here’s some advice:
1) Set realistic and attainable short term goals.
2) Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
3) Get a workout buddy to hold you accountable.
4) When you reach your goals, reward yourself!
5) Reassess and develop new goals.
I know that everyone’s busy, and making it to the gym every day isn’t always feasible. If time is a constraint, take the stairs whenever possible. Taking the stairs is a great way to burn calories. It also helps increase your stamina, build endurance and strengthen leg muscles.
Another great way to be mindful of exercise is with wearable fitness trackers. They allow you to monitor your results on the go. They are now 24/7 wellness devices, with an emphasis on heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, fitness and even helping to detect health problems like heart arrhythmia and sleep apnea.
For those of us who need some in-office or at-home motivation. Trevor suggests that you switch out your office chair, for a yoga ball. This will improve your core strength and posture. Try doing it for an hour every other day, then gradually increase your time on the ball. You can also try to stand up from your desk every 60 minutes and do 10 body weight squats, some jumping jacks, or other body weight exercises. These will take just a few minutes and you can do them while at work.
Last but not least, drink more water. Before reaching for a snack, drink a glass of water to cut down on your calorie intake and stay hydrated.
I don’t know about you, but I’m so excited January has hit, so that I have extra motivation to take action on all this great advice. I am looking forward to a stronger-than-ever me in 2018. I think everyone deserves to feel great and so does Trevor, SO, of course we have an amazing giveaway to help start your year off right!
